GNU Social
Just as AOL and CompuServe were the walled gardens of the 90s, FaceBook, Twitter and MySpace are the walled gardens of today. GNU Social is designed to create a free and distributed social network. * 7:15-7:30 - Presentation(s)
* 9:00-9:30 - Clean up and CAT (Chat About Technology) at the local Filibertos. (We sit around and talk about Linux over Mexican food)

Presentations this month

Introduction to Semantic Web, part2: Mechanics of the Semantic Web
When: First Thursday of each month at 7:30PM
Where: UAT

Brief: The presentation is an introduction to the tools used to display semantic information, design semantic information and deploying semantic information. Some of the most interesting semantic information is on the web and there are several browser add-ons that let you see what the machines are able to work with. Once you've seen it, why not try your hand at making some? re-Designing a simple example will give a good demonstration of Protege, a leading free Ontology design tool. Moving from the simple to a somewhat more "real world" ontology, provides a realistic transition from designing to deploying semantic information. In closing the circle, command line tools are used to query the Ontology just deployed to the semantic web. A quick tour of some of the most useful tools for the semantic web.

Presenter: Ed Nicholson, 0x1b, Inc.

Soekris

Benjamin Francom will be demonstrating how to install Linux on a Soekris net5501 embedded appliance. The installation involves setting up a PXE boot server for the Soekris to boot from, with the base installation being done through a serial console. The Soekris appliances are nice for *BSD or Linux custom routers as they are low power, and hackable.
