PLUG East Side Meeting2008 Jun 12 - 19:00 Etc/GMT-7 Presentations This MonthInstalling Linux on a Playstation 3 Scott will be installing Ubuntu 7.10 on a Playstation 3, being purchased earlier in the same day. At the beginning of the presentation, he will go through the first steps of the installation process. Other presentations and talks can occur while the operating system installs in the background. When the install is complete and the other agenda are items finished, Scott can then go through the final steps with the assistance of other PLUG members. Scott has not done this before, so there is plenty of room for error. The combined knowledge and expertise of PLUG members will contribute to the overall success of the presentation. Bio: Scott Sparks, age 23, has been working with computers most of his life, first in a family environment, then in school. After taking computer courses in high school focusing mainly on software and applications for Windows (in fact, he met his wife in one such course), he moved on to DeVry University. He retained his focus in Windows while obtaining a bachelor's degree in Computer Information Science. Scott's introduction to Linux in the business world occurred when he started doing technology support for Sequoia Choice Distance Learning, a school based in Mesa, Arizona. Scott now runs Ubuntu or Kubuntu on three of the four computers in his home, and is interested in open-source developments. He also maintains interest in several programming languages, artificial intelligence, and game programming. Devel Meeting, Thursday, June 5thWhat: PLUG Developer Meeting Topics: "Remote Debugging With GDB" and "The Basics of RedBoot" Remote Debugging With GDB by Walter Mack Debugging software on an embedded system is often done with very basic debugging techniques. A more sophisticated way of debugging (break points, getting/setting variables interactively, etc), would be nice. Gdb contains the relatively unknown capability to debug software remotely. In a remote debugging environment a small "gdb server" program runs on the target, while the user interface (the client) resides on a host computer. Server and Client can communicate through a tcp/ip connection or through a serial port. This hands-on presentation will show how to use gdb to debug embedded systems remotely. We will use an ARM-based embedded system and run the client on an IA32-based Linux PC. The Basics of RedBoot by Alan Dayley General purpose computers need a "boot loader" like GRUB or LILO to startup the operating system. Just like general purpose computers, embedded systems also need a boot loader. Embedded generally means smaller, less powerful and memory constrained when compared to general computers. Because of these restrictions and others like running from ROM instead of a hard drive, small embedded systems use a boot loader suited to the task. One of the more popular ones is called RedBoot. This hands-on presentation will show how RedBoot is configured on running ARM-based embedded system. Discussion will include: summer Free Software classes at MCCMesa Community College is offering a couple "Free Software" classes this summer. They're 8 week classes at the Business and Industry Institute. Both classes start at the beginning of June and run through the end of July. Call the Business and Industry Institute, 480 461 6100, and ask for Jessica in order to register for classes. GNU/Linux Security is a hands on course investigating different security aspects of security in a GNU/Linux environment. Students will also participate in a group project in order to gain deeper understanding of a security topic of the group's choice. GNU/Linux Security Introduction to GNU/Linux familiarizes students with the GNU/Linux desktop, a variety of Free Software applications and introductory knowledge of how GNU/Linux works. Introduction to GNU/Linux PLUG Developer Meeting, Thursday, May 1stWhat: PLUG Developer Meeting Topic: Unknown and logistics I have no main topic lined up and no recent volunteers to present something. As you may be aware, Adtron has been purchased by SMART Modular Technologies (http://www.smartm.com/news/article.cfm?newsID=260). With the merging of Adtron into SMART, network configuration and policies have changed. Presently the new network structure EXCLUDES any Internet access to anonymous visitors. That may be significant to our desire to hold the meeting at Adtron. I am still in discussions about this but as it stands, the no access policy remains in effect. Perhaps there also needs to be some discussion about the continuation of the meeting, where-ever the location. This email list is very quiet and spontaneous offers to present have tapered off completely. I have also become very busy in my own life and so have neglected meeting logistics more than usual. If I'm not driving the meeting, it seems to be dying. If the group does not want to have it, maybe we should stop. I'm certainly open to that possibility or to reconstituting and reviving things. I invite you all to discuss these issues here or at the meeting on Thursday. Please make your voice heard! Beyond such logistical discussions, it's "open mic night" at this point. Could be good, if we make it good. ------------- NO Internet access is available. We have a candy machine and soda machines that will take your money for refreshment. You are welcome to bring your own food. No alcohol please.
