Sr. Linux Admin., $80k - $90k/yrThis is a permanent opportunity in Phoenix - $80-$90k/yr + Bonus potential Job Responsibilities: Perform daily administration and support of RedHat Linux servers and SAN which utilizes EMC storage and Brocade switches. Includes hardware and software installation/upgrade, shell scripting, system performance monitoring, system sizing, capacity planning, system integration, and hardware diagnostics. Perform root cause analysis for issues/problems and create preventative measures. Interfaces with vendor support groups and other departments to ensure proper escalation and coordination towards problem resolution Monitor performance of oracle databases running on Linux and making appropriate tuning changes to achieve optimal performance. Participates in defining technical architecture for Linux servers and storage solutions. Work closely with the applications development and database administration teams, guiding developers in best practices related to using the underlying LINUX infrastructure and assisting them in resolving application and performance problems. Utilize Red Hat entitlement server for patch management. Perform monitoring, capacity planning and schedule preventive maintenance for Data Center environments (HVAC, UPS, Security) Provide 7x24 on-call troubleshooting and problem resolution Create and maintain detailed documentation and technical drawings of the server infrastructure. Establish and document hardware and software standards. Develops, publishes, and maintains documentation related to projects, hardware and software configuration Position Requirements: 3-5 years experience working with RedHat Linux Knowledge of SAN and NAS technologies. 3-5 years experience working with EMC storage and Brocade switches. Experience utilizing SNMP and HP Sitescope for monitoring. Proven experience in scripting skills in Shell and/or Perl.

This month's presentation will cover and introduction of the Puppet configuration management system, followed by a demonstration of a new linux system being configured in real time. Bio: Michael Garfias is a long time systems administrator with thirteen years of professional experience. He has worked for IBM, Network Associates, a number of unsuccessful startups and one successful (so far) startup. Michael's primary Linux interest is in large highly available installations, and keeping those running smoothly. Topic: OLPC demo. There will be a demo of the acoustic tape measure and other things you can do when you have more than one OLPC laptop on hand. OLPC has Live CDs, so download an image and see if you can get your laptop to join in during the presentation. CIS126DL Tuesdays and Thursdays CIS238DL Mondays and Wednesdays CIS271DL Mondays and Wednesdays Volunteers Needed: Compare Languages and AlgorithmsAt the 07Feb2008 Devel Meeting we had a discussion of programming languages and well known or interesting algorithms. Here are the results of the discussion displayed in kdissert, a mind mapping tool written for KDE. (The original kdissert file along with generated text and OpenOffice.org Writer files are attached to this article.) We discussed programming languages' strengths, weakness and uses. Then talked about different algorithms and common language features, like flow control. We added boxes to the mind map as we went. The goal was to arrive at a short list of languages and algorithms that we could ask people to code solutions for. At a future meeting we can compare the code of each algorithm as implemented in each language. The "Guidelines" are some criteria for the volunteers who will write the sample code. The languages and algorithms in blue and marked with an asterisk (*) were selected as targets for coding. Now we need volunteers to do the code! This is how it will work:
